Family Engagement Tip of the Month

Summer = Swimming

As the weather warms up and swimming season is around the corner, now is a great time to remind ourselves how to keep our kids safe in and around water.

Why is Water Safety important?

  • Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional-injury related death among children 19 and under.

  • Drowning happens every day in pools, hot tubs, and in natural bodies of water.

  • A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text, check a fishing line, or apply sunscreen.

  • Our county has over 533 miles of shoreline so our kids are near water regularly.

What can I do to ensure my family is Water Safe?

  • Learn to swim! Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks offers year-round swim lessons and there are many private classes throughout the county.

  • Water Smarts - Never swim alone, even if you are a great swimmer. Know your own limitations.

  • Water Watcher - Provide close attention to children swimming, teach children to always ask for permission to go near water, and swim in lifeguarded areas when possible.

Alive Solutions has tested different colors of swimsuits in pools with white bottoms, pools with dark bottoms, and lakes. See what color suits help keep your kids in view!

Anne Arundel County Department of Health

Recreational Water Quality

Are you ready to enjoy the water on our county's 534 miles of coastline this summer?

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health takes samples from more than 80 County beaches where people swim or engage in activities that may result in ingestion of recreational water. The water is tested for enterococci, bacteria that come from the intestines of all warm-blooded animals and are associated with fecal contamination.

Preemptive Rainfall Advisory
After rainfall, all Anne Arundel County beaches are under a no swimming/no direct water contact advisory for at least 48 hours due to predicted high bacterial levels.

Youth Experiencing Homelessness

The federal McKinney-Vento Act ensures all children who live in any of the following situations have a right to enroll in school and receive transportation by request.

  • in a shelter

  • in a motel or campground due to lack of adequate accommodation

  • in a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station

  • doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

If you believe your children may be eligible, or know a child who is, contact your local school and ask to speak to the Pupil Personnel Worker.
