Family Engagement Tip of the Month

March is National Sleep Awareness Month

Sleep is essential to our physical, mental, and emotional health, all of which play a role in school success!

Why is sleep important for school and life?

  • Cognitive Function - Sleep helps our brains with learning and memory; during sleep we process new information, file memories where needed, and clear out information not needed.

  • Physical Health - During sleep, our bodies are hard at work fighting off sickness, repairing blood vessels, promoting growth, and so much more.

  • Behavioral Health - The amount of sleep we get affects our mood, frustration-level, decision-making, and social interactions, all of which affect how we have a successful day.

How can I help my child improve their sleep?

  • Get enough sleep - Determine how much sleep your child needs, and work back from their morning wake up time to choose a bedtime.

  • Exercise - Physical activity promotes healthy sleep for people of all ages. Try to conclude vigorous physical activity at least two hours before bedtime; it's most impactful if the exercise is during sunlight hours.

  • Eat a healthy diet - A well-balanced diet promotes good sleep; avoid caffeine and big dinners within two hours of sleep.

  • Implement a screen curfew - The blue light that emits from our devices suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps us fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, the effects of social media can make it more difficult to get a good night's sleep.

Youth Experiencing Homelessness

The federal McKinney-Vento Act ensures all children who live in any of the following situations have a right to enroll in school and receive transportation by request.

  • in a shelter

  • in a motel or campground due to lack of adequate accommodation

  • in a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station

  • doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

McKinney-Vento Serving Students in Transition

If you believe your children may be eligible, or know a child who is, contact your local school and ask to speak to the Pupil Personnel Worker. All school phone numbers and additional information can be found on the Homeless Students section of the AACPS website.
