November is Career Development Month

As indicated in our Strategic Plan, “AACPS faces an urgent task in ensuring each student is college and career ready. This is not just about test scores, but equipping students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

What are some of the programs that help prepare AACPS students for future careers?

  • Elementary - Enhancing Elementary Excellence, Co-curricular clubs, Service Learning, Field trips, and a focus on interpersonal skills.

  • Middle - Magnet programs, AVID, Co-curricular clubs, and a continued focus on organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • High - Magnet programs, Career and Technology Education, Global Community Citizenship, Signature Programs, Internships, and more.

  • Learn more at our College & Career Readiness page.

How can I help my child be Career Ready?

  • Practice decision-making - Use opportunities through family life to help students plan and make decisions, whether it be a weekly schedule, a family trip, or setting up their bedroom.

  • Expose them to a variety of activities - Help them figure out what they like to do and what they’re good at by trying different activities. Talk with them about how their interests can grow into a career in the future.

  • Develop their financial skills - Talk about how money is earned and used, savings options, and involve them in day-to-day activities involving money, such as grocery shopping.

  • Attend the Family Involvement Conference - On Saturday, November 9, our annual Family Involvement Conference will focus on Career Readiness.

Career & Technology Education

Career and Technology Education (CTE) provides benefits beyond the diploma.  CTE programs offer students an opportunity to get a head start on their career, as well as post-secondary education.  Students can earn industry certifications and transcripted college credit while completing high school graduation requirements.

International Families

Educator of the Year Award

Frances Cruz-Serrano, who serves as Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ International Family Involvement Specialist, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Educator of the Year Award, given by the Anne Arundel County Office of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources.

Cruz-Serrano has worked for Anne Arundel since 2015, serving in a variety of capacities. In each of them, she has worked to facilitate communication with and provide resources for international families.

“Receiving this award is not just a personal honor, but a recognition of the collective effort and dedication of our team, which works tirelessly to bridge the gap between our international families and the educational system,” Cruz-Serrano said. “Every day, we strive to ensure that every family feels valued, understood, and empowered to support their children's academic journey. This is essential not only for their success but for the enrichment of our entire community.”

Youth Experiencing Homelessness

The federal McKinney-Vento Act ensures all children who live in any of the following situations have a right to enroll in school and receive transportation by request.

  • in a shelter

  • in a motel or campground due to lack of adequate accommodation

  • in a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station

  • doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

McKinney-Vento Serving Students in Transition

If you believe your children may be eligible, or know a child who is, contact your local school and ask to speak to the Pupil Personnel Worker. All school phone numbers and additional information can be found on the Homeless Students section of the AACPS website.
