Benfield Bulldog Family Newsletter

October 6, 2024

Greetings Benfield Families!

October is upon us and our children have been doing amazing work, and we are especially proud of their excitement and perseverance with the new reading curriculum, CKLA. The vocabulary is enriching, and the content is filled with new and interesting information to learn.

The Maryland State Department of Education has the Science of Reading statewide and CKLA is based on the Science of Reading. There is a great resource to read on the Amplify website called, 5 Shifts for True Science of Reading Instruction (click to read). This is a great summary of the importance of teaching children to read using Science of Reading.

Recently, MSDE released MCAP test scores, and for the third year in a row, Benfield has lead the Anne Arundel County elementary schools in reading, mathematics, and science (MISA). This is a testament to the staff and their dedication to teaching, the work ethic of our students, and continuous support of the whole Benfield community. We are all very proud of our Benfield Bulldogs!

We appreciate your continued support,

Sue Myers, Principal

Fall Festivities

Halloween is coming, and we are preparing for some fun events to celebrate. Room parents will be contacting you soon with details about the class parties. All activities will take place on October 31st.

Parade The Halloween Parade will take place outside, weather permitting, at 9:00 a.m. We will walk one loop around the building. Students should plan to wear their costumes to school, as there will be no opportunity to change into their costume. Parents are asked to ensure that costumes are "school friendly" and do not depict violence, gore, blood, or include any type of weapon. Parents are welcome to join us for the parade. In the event that the weather does not cooperate, we will hold the parade inside, but unfortunately will not be able to invite guests indoors.

Parking - please be understanding of the needs in the neighborhood and keep the streets passable. Last year, we received several complaints from neighbors who were blocked in and not able to get out.

Parties The class parties will take place at the end of the day from 1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. with the first grade class party occurring from 12:30 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Room parents will be contacting you with information about the party in your child's classroom.

A Special Thank You!

Thank you to the creative parents who took the time to decorate and ensure that Benfield looks festive on the inside and outside. We all appreciate you!

Importance of Being on Time

clock

Our instructional day begins at 8:00 a.m., so it is important for students to be unpacked and ready for instruction by this time. If you find that you are getting to school just as the bell rings, try to leave home a few minutes earlier. Students can be dropped off as early as 7:40 a.m. and they enter the building at 7:45 a.m. Starting off the day ready to learn when the bell rings is an important part of a child's success.

Bus Safety and Student Responsibilities

It is important to discuss appropriate behavior on the school bus. Ensuring a safe and positive environment for all students is a top priority as they are transported to school. Mrs. Fuson collaborates with drivers every morning at drop off to monitor how the Benfield students are doing on the bus. A few areas of concern from the drivers have been noted:

  • Respectful Conduct: Encourage your child to treat bus drivers and fellow students with respect. Disruptive behavior, including loud talking or shouting, should be avoided.

  • Safety First: Remind your child to remain seated while the bus is in motion, keep their hands and feet to themselves, and follow any safety instructions provided by the driver.

  • No Eating or Drinking: For cleanliness and to prevent health hazards, eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.

We appreciate your support in reinforcing these rules with your child. Working together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable bus ride for everyone.
