"Exploring Our World"

Every spring, as most of our intermediate families know, our students take the standardized assessment called MCAP. Tests like these, of course, don't measure everything about a school- or really even the most important things. They are, however, a useful indicator of our students' ability to demonstrate their understanding of some important math and reading concepts.

This month, we received our scores from the most recent assessment, and they were encouraging (you can find them below). We made commendable growth in many areas, and where our students struggled, we've been able to identify some trends to inform our classroom practices.

One of the key areas for improvement, predictably, was our students' ability to explain their reasoning. Our kids understand what they're learning and solving, but they can't always tell you how they know. And while improving test scores may not be a priority for everyone, I think we can all agree that the ability to reflect on our thinking and explain ourselves is a valuable skill.

This year, as you and your child explore new content, look for opportunities to invite them to explain their thinking. Ask them how they know their answers, and what they think of others' opinions. It may be just the practice they need to improve their scores- but even more importantly, it will remind them that being successful isn't about what you know, but what you do with it.

All the best,

Mr. Thompson

Attendance Information

attendance

We're so pleased to share that last year's data showed that our attendance is on the rise! Let's keep the trend going!

Remember, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) defines Chronic Absenteeism as being absent 10% or more of the days enrolled at CES, regardless of the reason. This equates to fewer than 18 absences if enrolled for 180 days.

Attendance Marking Guidelines:

  • Present for the Full Day: If your child arrives at school before 11:20 AM and stays until the conclusion of the day.

  • Present for the Full Day: If your child arrives on time and leaves for an early dismissal after 11:20 AM.

  • Present for a Half Day: If your child arrives at school after 11:20 AM and stays until the conclusion of the day.

  • Present for a Half Day: If your child arrives on time and leaves for an early dismissal before 11:20 AM.

  • Absent: If your child arrives on time but leaves before 8:40 AM.

We look forward to seeing all of our students at school!

Lunch Accounts

lunch

Did you know that, pursuant to AACPS policy, any unpaid lunch account debts have to be paid by the school? That money has to come from somewhere, of course, and that means less money for other programs and materials.

Please do your part by checking your balance and paying for meals here: https://www.aacps.org/page/purchasing-school-meals

And don't forget to check if you're eligible for Free or Reduced Lunches here: https://www.aacps.org/page/apply-for-free-or-reduced-price-meals

Thanks for helping us continue to ensure the highest quality instruction and activities for our students!
