Crofton High

The Cardinal Call

Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year Crofton!

Thank you to all for a great opening week! Our students and staff are hard at work already in helping everyone belong, grow, and succeed! The classrooms are active and its been great to talk to our students about their summers and what they are looking forward to this school year! By and large, our students have adjusted to the new cell phone guidelines well and are keeping their phones away in the hallways and classrooms. We will continue to remind the students of this expectation and I want to thank parents for helping us to reinforce this expectation at home. It is obviously a change for many, but something that will ultimately benefit our students academically and socially!

I also want to thank everyone for their efforts to have all of our students on campus and in class by 8:30 this year. Our traffic can get pretty backed up, so it is vitally important that our student drivers and car riders leave a little early to make sure they won't be late to school. Starting next week, if a student arrives to school and won't make it to their first period before 8:30 am, they will be instructed to go to the tardy table. Obviously, if bus or weather issues cause a delay to a large group of our students, we will adjust. But I do want to reiterate that our instructional day begins at 8:30 am and our students are expected to be in class at that time.

Next Thursday night we will be hosting our annual Back to School Night. Our program will begin at 6:00 pm in the auditorium for a short presentation, followed by a classroom schedule that will allow our parents to visit classrooms.

Finally, below you will find important information and changes for the upcoming school year - including our new grading policy and cell phone guideline.

This school year promises to be full of learning and memorable experiences for all. At Crofton High, our staff will do anything we can to ensure all of our students belong, grow and succeed! #TogetherCardsFly

New Cell Phone Use Guideline

As part of a move to maximize the focus on instructions, remove distractions, and improve mental health, students across Anne Arundel County Public Schools will use their cell phones less during the school year. High School students may use their phones during lunch but must have them off or on silent mode and out of sight at all other times, including in the hallways during transitions between classes. At Crofton High, the cell restriction includes Cardinal Connect/Flex time.Students will only be allowed to use their phones at lunch.

Crofton High School acknowledges that this is a shift in culture and it will take time for our students and staff to adjust. We are in full support of the guideline and will use the AACPS code of conduct if any disciplinary measures result from cell phone use during classroom time or hallway transitions.

We need your help and support at home in reviewing this new guideline with your students and explaining the expectations. I believe in our students and know they will follow the expectations, but we also know that we all need time to adjust and will show students grace through the beginning of school.

Transportation on Campus and Student Parking Information

Parking Update

Parking passes have been assigned to students. Please check your school email for approval, workshop and pick-up information.

No students will be allowed to park in the parking lot without a valid Fall 2024 pass. Staff will direct them to leave school grounds.

Students are not allowed to park at Crofton Middle School, Crofton Park, Linthicum Walks, or in the surrounding communities. If a student does not have a campus parking pass, they need to walk, get a ride to school, or take the school bus.

If you have questions, contact Ms. Johnston at cjohnston@aacps.org

Drop-Off information

The only place students may be dropped is the front entrance.

Enter the school grounds by the light at Crofton Park and use the access road closest to the school.

Pull as far forward as possible and release your student right away. This will help to keep traffic flowing and minimize the back-up.

Parents are not allowed to park in the lot and wait for the bell. Parking in spaces interferes with students and staff getting into the building on time.

We appreciate your support.

Appointments with School Staff

Please try to schedule appointments with staff after 9:00 am. This allows us time to get the school day started and keep excess traffic out of the lot during arrival.

School Entrance on Underwood Road

Only students with permits for F Lot and Buses should be using the entrance off Underwood Road In the morning. This access road is narrow and cannot efficiently accommodate excess traffic.

Cars without permits will not be allowed to enter the F Parking lot.

For your student’s safety, don't stop at the circle and drop them off. This may cause an unsafe condition for drivers, students and residents.

We hope these common sense guidelines will help to make arrivals smooth and efficient. If you have any other suggestions on how to improve the traffic flow, please share it with Ms. Johnston or Mr. Kassel.

We appreciate your support and look forward to a safe and successful start to the new school year.

Crofton High School Attendance Procedures

Please review the 2024-2025 CRHS Attendance procedures below with your student to become familiar with the CRHS expectations.

Regular attendance is paramount for success in high school.  Students who are frequently or repeatedly absent from school may not meet the minimum requirements necessary to receive credit in a class and/or to graduate.

FULL DAY ABSENCES and EARLY DISMISSALS:

Parent(s)/legal guardian(s) can log into their PowerSchoool Parent Portal account and complete the 2024-2025 AACPS Absence or Early Dismissal Reporting Form.

Doctor notes can be dropped off at the attendance office or emailed to the attendance secretary at Crofton High School.

§  A Doctor’s note is required for illnesses five (5) consecutive (or more) school days.

§  It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for make-up work with individual teachers.

Early dismissal requests should be reserved for important matters that cannot be accomplished outside of regular school hours.

The early dismissal form is NOT a sign out sheet. The parent/legal guardian must report to the attendance office with their photo I.D. and sign their student out. Once the parent is verified, then the student will be called from their classroom for dismissal.

PLEASE NOTE: The only people who are authorized to pick up a child are the parents/legal guardians. If the parent/legal guardian wants someone else to pick up their child, including stepparents, please complete the 2024-2025 AACPS Absence or Early Dismissal Reporting Form located on the PowerSchool Parent Portal account. We will verify the person’s ID when they come in and sign out the student. Please include the name of the person picking up, the time and reason. The parent/legal guardian will still need to be contacted by the school to verify prior to the student being released.

If you would like to add a person(s) to the authorization pick up list for the 2024-2025 SY without us contacting the parent/legal guardian each time, please complete the link, authorized person(s) for pick up/food drop off 2024-2025 SY.  This should be updated every school year.

Parents or legal guardians requesting a student to self-transport (should only be Seniors with valid parking permits) or walk home – the parent is always called to confirm. After the parent has given permission, the student MUST sign out in the attendance office before leaving the building.

NOTE: Classroom Interruptions Are NOT Permitted During Testing

Students who are ill MUST be seen and dismissed through the Health Room.

Students taking part in any extra-curricular programs (athletics, band, dance, drama, etc.) MUST be in attendance for the FULL day of school to be eligible to participate in the practice, game, performance, or activity. Exceptions must be approved in advance by the student’s alpha Assistant Principal.

LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL (TARDY):

The school day for all students begins promptly at 8:30am. Any student who arrives AFTER 8:30 am MUST REPORT TO THE TARDY CART (or if the tardy cart is closed), REPORT TO THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE for a pass to class.

For students arriving late, parents/legal guardians can send an email or a note with the reason their student is tardy to school. Please include the following information:

Student first and last name Date Reason student is tardy Parent/legal guardian signature

For a Planned/Scheduled Extended Absence during the school year (not to include semester exams) a student must do the following:

1.  Complete the request for advance notification of absence form found below or request a hard copy at the attendance office.

2.  Obtain teachers’ signatures/comments on the form.

3.  Return completed form to the attendance office and a copy will be given to the students Assistant Principal for final review (approval or denial) at least one (1) school day in advance of the first day of the absence.

EMERGENCY CARD INFORMATION:

It is imperative that your child's contact and emergency information is kept up to date.  Emergency cards are available at the beginning of each school year.  Parents should review the information listed on the emergency card and update the information annually.

Update your Emergency Card

The emergency card is not used as a pickup list. It is used in the case of a true emergency when we cannot get a hold of the parent(s)/legal guardian(s).

For questions regarding your child’s attendance, email the CRHS Attendance Clerk

or via phone at 410-451-5300.

The Cardinal Club

Attention ALL Crofton HS Sports Parents and Guardians:

The Cardinal Club, Crofton High School's athletic booster club, will be holding a brief concessions stand orientation for all parents and team liaisons on Wednesday, September 4th from 8:00-8:30 pm at the concessions stand (in the football stadium complex). This is just two nights before the football team's first home game, so please make every effort to attend! ALL interested parents (regardless of what sport season your student-athlete plays) are invited to attend--especially freshman parents who would like to get involved with Cardinal Club activities and help support Crofton athletics. It is a fun and easy way to support the Cardinal Club! Everyone who attends will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 concession stand gift card!

The Cardinal Club is seeking to fill two important volunteer positions this fall:

1. Concessions Operations Manager: Responsible for managing food/supply orders and ensuring the concessions stand is stocked and ready for a busy fall season! Please email croftonhighcardinalclub@gmail.com for more information, or attend the orientation on Wednesday September 4th at 8:00 pm. The manager will receive a complimentary all-access pass to all home events and a $500 donation to the Crofton HS athletic team of their choice.

2. Team Liaison coordinator: Serve as the representative between the athletic teams each season and the Cardinal Club board by helping schedule concessions shifts as well as promoting Cardinal Club events and outreach. This is a great job that can be done from home! No experience necessary!

Mark your calendar: The first Cardinal Club meeting of the '24-'25 academic year will take place on Wednesday September 11 at 7:00 pm in the Media Center.

Fall PSAT for grades 9 & 11: In early October grade 9 will take the PSAT 8/9 and the 11th graders will take the PSAT/NMSQT for free as part of the school day.

  • The PSAT 8/9 is a practice SAT designed for 8th and 9th graders to get a baseline score and help students prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT in 11th grade. It is a digital test containing reading, grammar, and math questions.

  • The PSAT/NMSQT is the pre-SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test that is only available for 11th graders and can enter them into a variety of scholarship and award opportunities. It also allows students to see where they are progressing to prepare for the spring SAT. SAT are used by colleges for acceptance, scholarships, and placement. Even schools that are “test optional” use scores for class placement. Free practice is available through Khan Academy.

Students cannot take the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, or AP Exams with accommodations unless their request for accommodations has been approved by Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Once approved, accommodations will stay in place for the remainder of High School.

In order to apply for College Board Accommodations:

  • The student has a current 504 or IEP (in place for at least 4 months),

  • The student has been using the accommodations (for at least 4 months),

  • The school has a completed SSD Request Form from a parent/guardian,

  • The student has a documented disability:

Once the school has a copy of your request for accommodations form (attached here) an application for accommodations will be submitted with College Board. This process may take several weeks and require additional documentation. If you have not already done so, Please complete the form and return it to: Colleen Adair, School testing coordinator at CAdair@aacps.org Deadlines for applications are July for the October PSAT and January for AP and the March SAT. Applications made after the deadline may not be approved prior to testing.

Revisions to the AACPS Grading Policy

Below is a condensed version of a letter that was sent to families earlier this week. The full letter with grading categories can be found on our website.

A year-long process to revise high school specific language in our AACPS Administrative Regulation II-RA – Grading took place in the 2023-24 school year. We wanted to share an outline the significant revisions to AACPS Administrative Regulation II-RA with a focus on the following changes for your awareness:

Grading

The maximum number of recorded grades increased from 15 to 22 per marking period.

All teachers will use a category-based recording system. Crofton has established two systems: one with a homework category and one without. Homework is required in the 5 core classes; other courses are optional. This will be denoted in all course outlines.

Course outlines shall also include the total number of assessments that will be recorded in this category.

A minimum of 4 recorded grades are required in every category except the Quarterly Assessment.

Redos

Redos have been reduced from 3 to 2 and may be completed for graded activities in the Assessment Category only. Students have choice in which assessments that they would like to redo.

Timelines for a redo submission have been adjusted from 10 to 5 school days if reteaching and/or additional work is NOT required. If reteaching and/or additional work IS required prior to theredo, the redo submission will remain 10 school days.

The timeline for a redo starts when the teacher provides feedback/grade for the graded activity in the Assessments category.

Late Work

Late work will be accepted with the following penalty structure:

  • 10% penalty per class period – class periods 1-4 and teacher feedback will be provided.

  • 50% will be earned for any late work turned in class periods 5-7 and teacher feedback is NOT required.

  • Any work submitted after the end of the 7

    th

class period would receive a grade of 0% or until the end of the marking period (pending which comes first).

  • Any late graded activities in the Assessment category are NOT eligible for redo.

  • Students who demonstrate a Good Faith Effort will earn a minimum grade of 50%.

Marking Period 4- Quarterly Assessment

Students who sit for an AP exam may opt out of the MP 4 Quarterly Assessment for that course only.

Chronic Absences

Students who are Chronically Absent (9+ days in a Semester- excused or unexcused) may have credit withheld by the school-based Attendance Review Committee.

Crofton will be working with our staff during our opening week to ensure the changes are understood and applied with fidelity and we will work with students over the opening days of school to review course syllabi, the common course outline for all courses, and deliver grade specific advisory lessons to help students understand the changes to Grading Regulation.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Crofton’s Administration.

Attention Parents!

Rating Scales and Written Input for Physicians and/or Outside Providers:

If you need to collect information from school personnel for your physician, private psychologist/assessor, or therapist, etc. via rating forms (electronic/written) or written feedback documents, CrHS has a formal process in place.

Please do not have your student deliver these paper documents to school staff directly. Please do not have your provider email the rating scales directly to school staff until we have a signed release of information at the school.

If you have documents or rating scales that your outside providers are interested in having school staff/teachers complete, please reach out to your student’s school counselor to initiate this process. Keep in mind, we aim for a two-week turnaround once the formal request is made, the items are provided to the school counselor for distribution and a signed release of information has been completed at CrHS. We will then send the completed documents directly to the requesting office/provider when completed items are received.

Work Based Learning Information

There is a mandatory meeting for seniors apprenticing with the NSA this year on Thursday, September 5th at 8:00am.  Meeting will be held in Room B375 and we will go over the WBL portal and requirements of the apprenticeship.  If you are unable to attend, please see
