Dear Fort Families,
Spring is in Full Bloom at Fort Smallwood Elementary!
Spring has arrived, bringing fresh opportunities for learning and growth! As we move into April, we want to keep you informed about important events and updates.
Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) Testing
Students in grades 3 through high school are required to participate in state testing. This is an opportunity for students to showcase their academic progress over the year.
Test-Taking Tips for Students in Grades 3-5
To help your child prepare for MCAP, we will focus on test-taking strategies in class, discussing what to expect and practicing calming techniques. As a parent, you can support your child in the following ways:
Ensure they get a good night’s sleep.
Prepare the night before by selecting clothes, packing their backpack, and preparing lunch.
Provide a nutritious breakfast.
Make sure they arrive at school on time.
Encourage a confident and positive mindset toward testing.

Security Measures
Fort Smallwood Elementary remains committed to the safety of our students and staff. Regular emergency drills are conducted in an age-appropriate manner, allowing us to practice, reflect, and improve our security protocols. A few schoolwide security measures include:
Locked Doors: All school doors remain locked at all times.
Visitor Access: Visitors must use the audio-visual intercom system to gain access. They will be required to state their name and purpose, and if unrecognized, present a photo ID. Please have your ID ready upon entry.
Entry Protocol: Adults being “buzzed” in must not hold the door for others. Each visitor must gain entry independently via the intercom system.
Item Drop-Offs: Parents dropping off items for students will be asked to leave them in the vestibule, clearly labeled with the student’s name, teacher, and grade. School staff will deliver these items.
Emergency Procedures: Security protocols are continuously reviewed and updated. Teachers are reminded to ensure all visitors have checked in at the office.
Office Hours: School office hours are 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Visitors may not be able to gain access outside of these hours.
Important Reminders:
Notify the office immediately of any changes to your phone number, address, or email to keep records current in case of emergencies.
Changes to a student’s dismissal procedure must be submitted in writing prior to 1:20 p.m.. We cannot verify identity over the phone.
As noted in recent AACPS updates, additional security enhancements, including increased police presence on school grounds, have been implemented district-wide. While these measures may be an adjustment, we appreciate our community’s ongoing support in prioritizing student safety.
Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Thank you for your partnership and support!
Warmly,
Mrs. Courtien
