Principal Clapper's Update

Hello GES Families,

I hope you and your family had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday and a wonderful week. It was great to get back to school, but the weather feels much more like winter now!

If you had not seen, Germantown Elementary was celebrated this week by AACPS as a 4 Star School! This means we have improved our scoring system with the ESSA Report Card, created by MSDE for all public schools in the state. The report scores a school several areas including MCAP testing for grades 3-5, Attendance, and Progress in English Learner Proficiency. We are one only a few Title I schools to earn 4 starts in the entire county.

On Monday, 12/9, the health department will be conducting vision and hearing screenings at GES. All students will have a vision screening and students in Pre-K, K, and 1 will also have a hearing screening. If your child wears glasses, please have your child wear them as it is part of the process.

On Tuesday, 12/10, we have a two-hour early dismissal for our second Project Unity Day. If your child's transportation plan is changing, please contact the school office.

On Thursday, 12/12, we have our GES Winter Concert for students in band, strings, and chorus. We are very excited about this event and seeing our students display their musical talents. We will also be doing our Gift Giveaway at the event. If you would like to donate any gently used / like new items, such as toys, books, or clothing, please send it into school on 12/9-12/11. The items will then be made available for any families before and after the concert to take home.

Title I Update

The Office of Advanced Co-Curricular Programs offers a four-session Future Makers Virtual STEM Club from January 8 to February 5, 2025. These four synchronous sessions, led by an AACPS instructor, will include a STEM kit for students to create, design, and explore collaboratively with their peers online.

Please note:

Families interested must complete the Enrollment Request by December 12, 2024.

Participation is limited to 15 students per grade 3-5: 45 students per school. If enrollment requests exceed the grade-level limit, a lottery will be initiated to determine enrollment by grade level and school.

Families who elect to participate are requested to have students pick up the STEM kits at their home school.

Necessary: Students will need a school-issued Chromebook. There is no cost to participate in this program.
