Preparing For Synchronous Learning

As the weather turns colder and we prepare for the possibility of inclement weather, we must also prepare for the possibility of virtual learning. In the event of an inclement weather day, AACPS may participate in synchronous (live student instruction with teacher) learning.

On inclement weather days or during emergency situations that AACPS implements virtual instruction, a virtual schedule will be followed. A link to virtual schedules is located at https://www.aacps.org/page/student-schedules. Information for students and families regarding Chromebook readiness, student engagement, and student attendance is included on all student Virtual Instruction Day schedules. The break and the lunch times are the same countywide.

Please take the time to verify your children know how to log onto Brightspace. Brightspace is the learning management system for AACPS. Students will be expected to log in for virtual learning.

How to Keep a Routine for Your Child Over Winter Break

As the winter break approaches, many parents find themselves facing the challenge of maintaining a routine for their child. With the absence of school schedules and extracurricular activities, it can be tempting to let go of structure and embrace the relaxed atmosphere of the holidays. However, maintaining a routine during winter break can provide numerous benefits for both children and parents. In this blog post, we will explore strategies on how to keep a routine for your child over the winter break.

1. Set Clear Expectations:

Before the winter break begins, have a conversation with your child about the importance of maintaining a routine. Explain the benefits of structure and how it can help them stay active, engaged, and prepared for the return to school. Setting clear expectations will help your child understand the importance of sticking to a routine and reduce the chances of resistance or pushback.

2. Create a Daily Schedule:

One of the most effective ways to keep a routine for your child during winter break is to create a daily schedule. Plan activities, meals, and rest times at regular intervals throughout the day. Designate specific blocks of time for academic enrichment, physical exercise, creative pursuits, and relaxation. Having a structured schedule will provide a sense of stability for your child and help them maintain a sense of normalcy during the break.

3. Incorporate Learning Opportunities:

While winter break is a time for relaxation and fun, it is also essential to include learning opportunities in your child’s routine. Consider incorporating educational activities such as reading, writing, puzzles, or educational games into their daily schedule. This will help prevent the “learning loss” often experienced during extended breaks from school and ensure that your child remains engaged academically.

4. Encourage Physical Activity:

Physical activity is vital for a child’s overall development and well-being. Include regular exercise or outdoor playtime in your child’s daily routine. Bundle up and take advantage of the winter weather by going for walks, building snowmen, or engaging in winter sports. Physical activity not only helps your child expend energy but also promotes better sleep, boosts mood, and enhances cognitive function.

5. Maintain Healthy Eating Habits:

While it may be tempting to indulge in holiday treats and sweets, it is crucial to maintain a healthy eating routine for your child. Encourage regular and balanced meals throughout the day, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, emphasizing the importance of moderation and making healthy choices. Proper nutrition will help sustain your child’s energy levels and support their overall well-being during the winter break.

6. Limit Screen Time:

With more free time during the winter break, children might be tempted to spend excessive hours in front of screens. However, it is important to set limits on screen time to ensure a healthy balance. Establish clear guidelines for when and how much screen time is allowed each day, and encourage alternative activities such as reading, arts and crafts, board games, or family bonding time.

7. Establish Bedtime and Wake-Up Routine:

Maintaining consistent sleep patterns is crucial for your child’s health and overall well-being. Establish a bedtime routine that includes relaxation activities such as reading or taking a warm bath. Set a regular wake-up time to maintain a consistent sleep-wake cycle. Sufficient sleep will help your child feel rested, focused, and ready for the day ahead.

Conclusion:

While winter break brings a break from school, maintaining a routine for your child can provide numerous benefits. Clear expectations, a daily schedule, incorporating learning opportunities, encouraging physical activity, maintaining healthy eating habits, limiting screen time, and establishing a bedtime routine are some effective strategies to keep your child on track during the winter break. By maintaining routine and structure, you can ensure that your child remains engaged, happy, and prepared for the return to school after the holidays.

PE News:

In December, students wrapped up our soccer skills unit.  Older students applied their skills and strategies in small and large sided soccer games, while younger students showed off their skills at a variety of kicking and dribbling centers. At the end of the month, students will participate in a variety of fun winter-themed activities.

General Music & Chorus

December is a busy month for our LES Chorus! We are caroling at the LES Pancake Breakfast on December 7th. We are also having extra after school rehearsals to prepare for our Winter Concert. On December 18th chorus, band, and strings will present 2 concerts; an assembly during the day to our students, teachers, and staff and then in the evening to our friends and families.

In General Music, 3rd grade will explore the instruments in the orchestra through a story, “The Composer is Dead” by Lemony Snicket, 4th grade is adding sound effects to short movie clips, and 5th grade is creating a playlist to communicate their musical preferences. In Pre-K, we are finishing up moving and playing in groups of two and then working on identifying fast and slow in music, kindergarten is learning to read and play their first two rhythms, 1st grade is moving to ABA form and beginning to work with solfege notes So and Mi, 2nd grade is grouping instruments by characteristics and identifying melodic direction in songs.

Media

This month, all grades will participate in Hour of Code.  What is the Hour of Code?  The Hour of Code is a free introduction to computer science through fun activities and videos for learners of all skill levels.  Learn more by watching this video.  Students can continue the fun by visiting Code Studio Courses right from their ClassLink page.
