Principal's Message

Shady Side Friends,

We are celebrating student success on our most recent iReady assessments today with a pizza party. This is part of a concerted effort to deliberately focus on perseverance and student academic growth!

Are you looking for ways to engage with your child at home? One fun activity I recall from my childhood was working on math fact flashcards with my mom. We did this in a relaxed, stress-free way that allowed me to sharpen my math fluency while spending quality time with mom!

There are countless resources available online for your child to do this or you can do it the old fashion way using index cards and a pencil or marker! I recommend the old fashion way!

This is our first newsletter in our new bi-weekly format! We discovered that important information was getting lost in the larger, weekly publication! As important information arises, we will send that out in the form of emails and / or text messages. Hopefully, this will be a productive and efficient way to communicate!

Your feedback is always welcomed!

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

John Barzal

AACPS Device Loaner Program

AACPS will continue to provide student devices for use as an instructional tool throughout the school day. The AACPS Student Device Loaner Program provides a device to students that need a device to support learning at home. If approved for participation in the program, students will be assigned a Chromebook. The Chromebook needs to be transported back and forth between home and school as it will be used by the student throughout the school day.

If you are interested in a device for your student, please utilize this link for more information and to request a Chromebook.

Career Day

COMING SOON!

Shady Side Elementary will be hosting a Career Day for our students on Friday, April 25. At this time we are asking for anyone who might be interested in presenting to complete this Google Form. More information will be sent out to those who would like to volunteer.

Innovators of Science & Engineering Challenge

We are pleased to announce that Shady Side Elementary will be having an Innovators of Science and Engineering Challenge, April 2, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. We encourage all students from grades Pre-K through 5 to participate. The challenge presents an excellent opportunity for students to be recognized for their scientific discoveries and explorations. Science allows children to challenge their minds and engage in higher level, critical thinking skills. For this reason we hope you will encourage your child to participate in this unique learning experience.
