Principal's Message

Shady Side Friends,

This has been an incredible week at Shady Side Elementary School! A huge thank you goes out to our phenomenal PBIS Team and to all the parents who volunteered their time on Thursday to make our celebration a huge success! We couldn't have done it without you! Students had a great time!

I also want to thank you for the wonderful turnout at this year's Halloween parade! We couldn't have asked for a better day for this event!

This edition of the Seagull Scoop contains important information about how you can sign up to pay for a variety of school related expenses in a simplified way. This is provided for your convenience. You will also find information about the Federal impact survey. Please take a moment to carefully review this information.

FEDERAL IMPACT PROGRAM SURVEY

Parents who are active military or who live or work on Federal Property in Maryland are

asked to complete this year’s Federal Impact Aid Survey that became available on

September 30, 2024.

You will be asked to verify your home address and identify if it is located on federal

property. You will also complete sections identifying if a family member is in the military

or works on federally owned property in Maryland. The survey should only take a couple

of minutes to complete and, be assured, all data collected is kept completely confidential.

Why Complete This Survey

Anne Arundel County Public Schools, like many local school districts across the United

States, include within our boundaries parcels of land that are owned by the Federal

Government or that have been removed from the local tax rolls by the Federal Government.

Federal property is exempt from local property taxes. By submitting an application to the

Department of Education each January, AACPS receives approximately $2 million to assist

in educating all our students.

Holiday Assistance Request

If you anticipate your family may need some assistance with food, coats, toys/gifts etc. over the holiday season please fill out this form to request assistance by Wednesday, October 30th to let Ms. Tebault know. Ms. Tebault will then reach out to you with additional information, and we will try to get you connected with a local organization that can help. Please understand that with limited resources we may not be able to help everyone with all of their requests, but we will do our best to help as many families as we can. Please reach out to Ms. Tebault with any questions- atebault@aacps.org.

Student Accident Insurance

Anne Arundel County Public Schools does not provide medical
insurance for injuries to students that occur while the student is at
school or when off of school property while they are involved in a
school-related activity. However, AACPS has selected Bob McCloskey
Insurance to provide several student accident insurance coverage
options that parents/guardians may purchase. If you do not have health
insurance, this insurance may be a resource to consider. To learn more,
visit www.aacps.org/studentaccidentinsurance.

CogAT Testing

Grade 2 & 5 CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Testing) will start on November 4. CogAT® measures students’ learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most closely related to success in school: reasoning with verbal, quantitative, and spatial concepts. Not all children learn in the same way. Some think best using words or numbers. Others think best when using images. This test will help the teacher understand the ways in which your child reasons best.

Grade 2 will test on November 4, 6, and 7

Grade 5 will test on November 8, 13, and 14

A letter came home with students in grades 2 and 5 on Monday, October 21 with more information.

From the Reading Office

Three tips for supporting writing skills at home.

1. Help children use the writing process for a variety of purposes.

2. Help children practice handwriting, spelling, typing, and word processing.

3. Provide a supportive environment that encourages children to write daily.
