Dear Parents,

We have had an awesome first marking period and it is hard to believe that we are almost half of the way through marking period 2. I want to thank all the parents who met with teachers at our November conferences. Although we met with families in November, we continually meet with families throughout the year, so please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Our staff emails can be found at https://www.aacps.org/o/southgatees/page/faculty-staff.

December to Remember

Promoting regular attendance for all students remains a focus for our school.  To make this a “December to Remember”, Southgate will hold our Annual "December to Remember" Spirit Week & Attendance Challenge. The winning class in each grade level Prek-5 gets popcorn for their students to enjoy during their holiday celebration on Friday, December 19th, the last day before Winter Break. This challenge will also lead to Spirit Week from December 15th to December 19th.

In addition, to allow for regular attendance, we ask families to plan for appointments to pick-up after 11:30 am or that allow for student to return to school after the appointment.

Project Warm

As a Community School, Southgate was able to apply for a grant that will provide winter coats to students at our school.   Families simply need to opt-in by completing the form that was sent home to families.  If you have questions or did not receive a form, please contact Ashley Miller at almiller3@aacps.org.  The form must be completed by Friday, December 5th for students to receive a coat.

 MSDE Visit

During the month of January, Southgate will host a visit from the MSDE Expert Review Team.  This visit will include classroom walkthroughs as well as interviews with focus groups of students, staff, and parents.  We look forward to showing all that our students can do.

A class with 90% or higher earns a snowman each day.

Community School Updates

Mrs. Miller would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to every parent and guardian who completed the Family Feedback Survey this fall. Out of 47 community schools in AACPS, Southgate ranked first place with an incredible 352 surveys completed!

Your feedback is invaluable in shaping the programs we offer at Southgate. These surveys help ensure that our programming reflects what you and your families truly want and need. I am committed to continuing to provide opportunities and resources based on your input.

Thank you again for supporting the Southgate Community School Program, we couldn't do this without you!

STEM News

Hello Southgate friends and families!

We want to make sure our students have extra engaging activities for exploring circuits in STEM, so I've created a project through Donors Choose, the nonprofit classroom funding site for public school teachers. Right now, every donation is doubled! If you donate any amount, the Young Sheldon Foundation will match dollar for dollar!

Here is a link to our project:

Exploring Circuitry with Squishy Circuit Fun

Your support would mean so much to our students. In return, you'll receive our heartfelt gratitude and your students coming home to talk about all the fun they had with this activity!  All students in 2nd - 5th will be using these materials!

Thank you for considering a gift to our school,

Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Waters

P.S. If you know anyone who may want to help my students, please pass this along!

Dear Southgate Families,

We are thrilled to announce the winner of our Bubba’s 33 gift card design contest!

Congratulations to Mrs. Briemann’s second grade class for their festive and creative winning design! Their artwork will be featured on all Bubba’s 33 gift cards sold through the PTA this season.

We were blown away by the incredible talent and creativity displayed by all our Tigers who participated. Thank you to every student who submitted a design — your school spirit and artistic skills are truly impressive!

Thank you for supporting Southgate Elementary PTA!

Go Tigers!
