Tiger Tales September 2024

WELCOME BACK! LET'S HAVE A TERRIFIC YEAR. Mr. Greubel, Principal Ms. Tuscano, Assistant Principal

Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year where we believe learning is possible for all students and that Parents are our Partners. Ms. Tuscano and I were thrilled to see the tremendous turnout at our recent Sneak-a-Peek event and New Student Orientation.  Everyone seemed so excited for the beginning of the school year and our staff is eager to engage families throughout the year.

As the year begins, we are busy establishing routines and building relationships. One routine we are working hard to establish is for students to be in classrooms and ready for the day by 8:00am.  For us here at Southgate, our doors open in the morning at 7:40am. We truly appreciate that families have been working to have students arrive before 7:55am to allow students enough time to be in class at 8:00am. In the afternoon, our dismissal begins at 2:25pm. To provide a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal, we ask you to review your families plan with your child.

We are pleased to become a Maryland Community School. Receiving this distinction will allow our school to further the work we have done and allow us to further serve as a hub that brings families, communities, and partners together to remove barriers to learning.  In our first year as a Community School, we will be forming a steering committee of parents and school staff to conduct a needs and asset assessment. Our goal will be to develop community partnerships and support programs that support families and address learning barriers.

Regular school attendance is essential to a student’s academic progress. Our team at Southgate closely monitors the attendance of all students. In order to have satisfactory attendance, students need to attend more than 90% of the days they are enrolled. Getting your child to school on time every day can ensure your child has a chance to succeed in school. Please contact Southgate if your child starts to demonstrate school avoidance behavior.

Anne Arundel County has adopted a new communication system. The portion of this system that allows parents to receive whole class communications and to text message directly with teachers, is called ROOMS. Parents can access ROOMS by downloading the new AACPS app. AACPS is also sending out email invitations for parents to join ROOMS.

This year, we will continue to develop students’ understanding of the Southgate Elementary P.A.W.S. for Learning.  We will continue to develop language that promotes action and a positive school environment.  We will be setting classroom expectations and having conversations to develop Essential Agreements.  We have included our PAWS for Learning Matrix on our Family Resource Page so that you can discuss it with your child.

Our annual Back to School Night will be on September 12th from 6:00-7:00pm. Teachers and families will have an opportunity to discuss school year academics and review expectations. This will include information about our REVEAL Math Curriculum as well as Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA).

Special Thank You to our amazing PTA for hosting summer events such as our Kindergarten Meet and Greet and for sponsoring our student agendas!  Please stop by our PTA table at Back to School Night to find out about how this group will support our students.

Friendly Reminder

Important Reminders !

School Hours - 8:00 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.

School Doors open at 7:40 a.m. and students must be in their seats ready to go by 8:00 a.m.

When students are late, they must be signed in by an adult in the main office. If the doors are closed, your student is late.

We would appreciate your promptness during dismissal and following all pick- up procedures. Having students cross in front cars and crossing without adult supervision is concerning.  Our number one priority is student safety.

Birthday Celebration Policy

Birthdays are very special days to honor and celebrate your child. We understand the excitement and wanting to share with classmates, however, Birthday Treats are no longer being accepted.  This includes cupcakes, cookies, balloons, etc. Students will be recognized on the announcements.

Thank you for your understanding.

Student Early Dismissal School Policy

When you wish to have your child dismissed early from school, please send a note so that the teacher and the office staff are aware of the arrangements  When emailing the teacher please add jmclaren@aacps.org or hargubright@aacps.org as well.

We request the person picking up your child come to the office with identification and sign the register. Your child will be sent to the office upon notification by the office staff.

Parents can be most helpful by not calling the school for daily changes. Please confirm arrangements with your child prior to your child’s departure from home in the morning.

To facilitate a safe and orderly dismissal for all students we will not be able to grant early dismissal to parents arriving after 2:00 p.m.

Bus Service Route Impact Notifications

As part of an ongoing effort to keep families and the community updated on impacts to bus route operations, Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers email and text message notifications of disruptions to student bus service.

Bus Notifications Sign-Up

The system provides email and text message notifications in either English or Spanish to those who register. Users are asked to provide the bus number and school for which they wish to receive the notification.

Users can sign up to receive multiple notifications and will be asked to confirm registrations through the email address or phone number they utilize. One registration will need to be done for each bus/school combination.

Messages will be sent at 7:30 p.m. the night before a school day to alert users of delays and cancellations for the following school day. Messages will also be sent beginning at 6 a.m. on each school day and periodically through 8:45 a.m. as updates are entered from bus contractors.

Users will receive one message per delay or cancellation and will receive an additional message if there is a change in that bus’ status. Between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on each school day, messages will be sent to users to remind them of afternoon-only impacts to bus routes.

Impacts to routes will also continue to be listed through the disruptions link above on this page. Except in extreme circumstances, no other messaging is planned.

While AACPS has made significant strides in addressing the number of bus driver vacancies across the school system, the work of building a bench of substitute drivers in the face of an ongoing driver shortage continues, and in some cases illness or other driver absences will result in bus routes not running on a given day.
