Family Engagement Tip of the Month |
How to prevent the Summer Slide |
☀️ Summer is a time for fun, rest, and making memories. It’s also a great opportunity to help children continue building on everything they learned during the school year, so let the summer learning adventures begin!
What is the “Summer Slide”?
The “Summer Slide” happens when students lose some of the academic progress they made during the school year over summer break. The good news? Learning can happen anywhere - at home, outdoors, on trips, or during everyday activities!
Here are a few easy and enjoyable ways families can help keep learning going all summer long:
📖 Read Every Day: Books, magazines, graphic novels, recipes, signs, or even game instructions all count! Let children choose topics they enjoy and make reading part of your daily routine.
🍳 Cook Together: Cooking is full of learning opportunities! Practice reading directions, measuring ingredients, exploring cultures, and learning the science behind food.
🏛️ Explore Your Community: Visit museums, parks, libraries, historical landmarks, or community events. Learning comes alive through hands-on experiences and local adventures.
⚽ Stay Active: Physical activity supports healthy bodies and healthy brains. Encourage movement through sports, swimming, bike rides, dancing, walks, or outdoor games.
🎯 Set Simple Summer Goals: Create fun, realistic goals together, like reading a certain number of books, practicing math facts, or trying new activities. Celebrate progress with small rewards, family outings, or special treats.
Most importantly, enjoy the summer together! Small moments of learning each day can make a big difference when students return to school in the fall, ready to succeed.
